Where and how can I get a visa to Tanzania – there are two ways of getting a visa to Tanzania
- Visa on arrival (VOA) – we all know the good old VOA procedure where you arrive at the airport with your passport and 50 USD or (100 USD for American tourists) fill a form, pay and get your passport stamped. The only problem being that you have to wait in line, sometimes these lines are long and add to your tiredness after a long journey. Furthermore, the visa department can be understaffed when you arrive which may increase the wait.
- E-Visa (online e-Visa portal) – The E-Visa system was introduced on the 26th of November 2018, normally e-Visas take a minimum of 48 hours to process and applicants will receive an emails within 2 business days with a link to download a PDF e-visas – they have bar codes and look pretty official. You do still have to fill out info on the last page by hand.
You can apply for the eVisa by clicking this link https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/
If you have plenty of time to apply for an online visa and somehow its slow to process, then you should arrive with an online reference number as proof to avoid paying again.
Requirements for a Tanzanian visa – a valid passport that doesn’t expire within the next three months with at least one blank page and the necessary visa fee.
Other requirements can be proof of return ticket and accommodation or tour operator (we don’t see these as a must have though)
*Transit visas (to and from the Nairobi Airport 20 USD) – if for whatever reason (i.e. cheap tickets, short flight hours, Ticket availability, personal travel plans etc.) you choose to land in Nairobi airport, you will need to pay for a transit visa that will allow you to go through Kenya in order to get to Tanzania, the transit visa is 20 USD per person payable to the Kenyan emigration service. Once you get to Tanzania you will go on with the visa process as above.
