Saadani National Park

Destination Details

In Saadani National Park is the only national park in Tanzania where thesavannah merges with the coast and of the Indian Ocean creating a truly unique piece of nature.

Here you can stand on a beautiful, un-spoilt sandy beach with coconut trees and look out over the sea But if you turn around, you look into an exciting wilderness, with lush forest, rivers and savannah.

Saadani National park with 1178 Km square is located between Bagamoyo and Tanga and only 40 km shy of Zanzibar. The park offers a vastly varied ecosystem, with an exciting mix of different types of flora and fauna. Here, crabs and elephants meet, and you can be awakened from your midday beach nap by the roar of a lion in the distance.

There are large populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, wildebeest, antelopes, primate, giraffe, buffalo, lions, leopards and most of the other animals you would expect from a good safari park.Apart from the amazing animals, there are different bird species ranging from the flamingos to some rare birds which are attracted by the special nature of Saadani. Dolphins and Humpback whales can also be spotted on the waters around the park although with difficulty and luck

You can go on a boat safari in Saadani and sail up the coast or up the Wami River into the park.  After a good day’s safari you can jump directly into the Indian Ocean and cool off.

On the beach you can experience turtles being hatched primarily the endangered green turtle) and there is often wildlife, or traces of them right near the camp.

Other activities in the park include canoe trips and hiking safaris. Saadani is a fairly new and relatively unknown park, so it is quite obvious if you want to get away from the tourist crowds and at the same time combine the safari with some relaxation on the beach.

With a typical equatorial African climate resulting to high humidity levels, Saadani is suitable to visit all year round outside the rainy seasons of April and May.
